Know Your History | Legendary Audi Sport

If you're a fan of performance driving, there's a good chance you know about Audi Sport. These performance Audi Sport models are born and bread for sport racing on a track, but they're built for the highways and the streets.

But before Audi Sport was synonymous with winning cups and setting records, Audi wasn't thought of the same way—it was just like your "teacher's car," as one person put it. Thankfully, things have changed. But do you know what catalyzed Audi Sport into the performance powerhouse that fields Audi Sport RS and R8 models? The Audi 5-cylinder engine—a kingmaker.

In 1976, the first 5-cylinder engine launched and suddenly, Audi was getting the recognition it deserved. The last Audi inline-5 was produced in 1997—that's 21 years of Audi's legendary 5-cylinder engine and the beginning of Audi's rally and motorsport driving. Most folks from New London, Groton, Westerly, Hartford, CT and Warwick, RI know about the role Audi's quattro® all-wheel drive (AWD) played in Audi's rally legacy, but the video above shines the light on the lesser-known 5-cylinder engine.

If you're interested in getting your hands on some Audi Sport heritage, get in contact with our sales team here at Hoffman Audi of New London and ask about our Audi Sport offerings. If we have the model you're interested in on our showroom floor, come in for a test drive! Of course, if we don't have it yet, we can always place an order for your perfect Audi model, so let us know how we can best serve you and get you a piece of that legendary Audi performance pedigree.
